King and the innocent

A king ordered the execution of an innocent man. The innocent man said: “O King, do not seek to harm me merely out of the anger you feel toward me, for this punishment will end for me in but a single breath — yet its sin shall remain with you forever.”

The span of life, like a desert wind passed;
Bitterness and sweetness, ugliness and beauty — all passed.
The oppressor thought he had wronged us,
But the burden stayed upon his neck and, from us passed.

The king found the man’s advice wise and spared his life. - Saadi

پادشاهی به کشتن بی‌گناهی فرمان داد. بی‌گنه گفت: ای مَلِک به موجب خشمی که تو را بر من است، آزار خود مجوی که این عقوبت بر من به یک نفَس به سر آید و بزه آن بر تو جاوید بماند.

دوران بقا چون باد صحرا بگذشت
تلخی و خوشی و زشت و زیبا بگذشت
پنداشت ستمگر که جفا بر ما کرد
در گردن او بماند و بر ما بگذشت

ملک را نصیحت او سودمند آمد و از سر خون او برخاست.
